Daydreaming again…

Last year, I went on a trip for my birthday.

And, while I really, truly loved Las Vegas, the people that I went on the trip with were… less than stellar travel companions and it really took away from my trip. It really dragged me down. Here I was in one of the most exciting cities and I was dealing with two Debbie Downers who didn’t even really want to be there.

I really felt like I got robbed of the true experience, in a sense. And I’m not saying that for pity. I’m just saying that because… the trip, treating myself for my bithday, it was a big deal to me. I’d never done that before, so to have my first foray into Birthday travel be that crappy, I want a do-over.

I’m daydreaming right now. My birthday is coming up and I really don’t want to be here for it. I want to go somewhere. It doesn’t have to be far away. I just don’t want to be here. Where can I go, on a limited budget, that will allow me to enjoy myself and feel as though I’ve truly treated myself for my birthday? I know Vegas is out of contention for this year, but I’d love to just go somewhere. I just want to do something for me. I know that’s selfish, but that’s what I want.

My parents and brothers have been asking me what I want for my birthday and I’ve just been telling them money. I know you’re not supposed to request money from people, but honestly, even if they just gave me 20 bucks, that would be an extra 20 bucks I could put towards an adventure, right? They don’t understand why I want to go. I can’t understand why I’d want to stay. Alas, we’re at the crossroads that is myself and my family.

There’s a whole world out there… and I just want to see all of it. Right now, though? Daydreaming of an affordable Western Canada or Western USA destination that I could escape too for a weekend.

I’m open to suggestions… if anyone has any.

    1. I would love to go to Banff but it’s super expensive to stay in hotels there. Also, it’s where Knight’s parents live. So that might be awkward. I might actually end up in Calgary if I can swing it…

      1. That’s fair. There’s some affordable hotels just outside of Banff which are still in the mountains. You really can’t can’t go wrong with Calgary since there’s lots of places to explore and things to do in this city.

  1. Oh my dearest Vee, this is not selfish but this is a must do. I can’t suggest where. But just go wherever your heart takes you. I totally understand how imp the company you travel with is and how supremely necessary it is to go on a short solo birthday trip. I’ve been doing it since 3 years now and trust me it’s all worth it. I can only plan limited budget and a couple of days. But feel completely rejuvenated. I usually go to resorts. I love spas. A place with enough adventure and amenities. Just relax. Go for it. All the best! We all would be looking forward to know about your new exploration 😄

    1. Thank you, my dear. The people you travel with is so important. If you travel with the wrong people it can completely ruin your entire trip! Do you like solo birthday trips? I don’t know, part of me thinks I would like to go somewhere with someone so I am not alone on my birthday, but another part of me wonders if going with someone would be better… so I don’t get lonely!

      1. My experience with the wrong company is very fresh in my memory as it happened last year. So I feel whatever you are trying to say. I go to places where I have a friend/s But it’ll only last for a meal. I doubt all would keep a whole day spare especially if it’s coming on a weekday. But YOU are the only person who wouldn’t ruin it at any cost. Cos it’s your day. The day to rejoice and do everything that’s on your to-do list and make it the most wonderful memory of your 2019. Your little efforts will bring back the happiness on your face. And still if you don’t travel for any reason, just make sure, you do everything by being in your own city. I mean ofcourse we all have our crazy fun list for which we may not necessarily find a company to try it with. I don’t know the big day, but I which you have a blast ❣️

  2. Gosh, it’s a bad time of year for my suggestion, but I love anything water. Rivers, lakes, oceans, water parks… I don’t know where you’re located, but this would be my idea of a perfect vacay. And… don’t worry about asking your family for birthday money. I think it is fine.

    1. I love the ocean! A trip to the beach always does the soul some good. I’m actually not that far from the Pacific, I really should consider that. Thank you ❤

  3. Do I remember you saying you want to/would move to Calgary? Go there for a weekend. Walk around & check out neighborhoods you want to live it. Imagine yrself living there. Think about how to make that happen. Sell it to the fam as job hunting.

  4. For the last four years, I’ve celebrated my birthday away from home. However, my next one will most likely be at home due to a new job and responsibilities. But making a day trip to a nearby town (or neighborhood) is a thought; it doesn’t have to be out of the country, and it’s much cheaper that way! Whatever you decide to do, I’m sure you’ll have a good birthday. 🙂

    1. Did you get a new job? Or is this one that yo had before and you’re just still on the hunt?? Congratulations if you do have a new job! That’s super exciting!!! Clearly I need to catch up on your blog!!

      1. It’s still all tentative, but I’m in the on-boarding process, which will take some time to complete. I haven’t talked about it on my blog, just because I want to make sure that I’ve officially started to announce it. Will keep you updated soon!

      2. Oh good call! I announced when I got offered in July and then they rescinded. Won’t make that mistake ever, ever again!

Wishing you luck and ease with the rest of the process. I hope it goes well.

      3. Exactly. This job is “at-will,” too, so I also have to be careful if I were to announce it too soon. I hope you’re doing all right with the job hunt. Brutal as it is, things will come your way!

    1. Yeah, the plane ticket alone would bankrupt me lol! My birthday is on the long weekend. Flights are infinitely more expensive just because of that!

And debby downers are the worst. I want to travel with people who are seeking adventure like meeeeee

  5. California. I absolutely love California and it has everything. I’ve been to LA, Yosemite, San Diego, Venice Beach… I would say either LA or Yosemite. I went solo then a friend met me out there. Best vacation and that’s where I’m moving, one day. I did all that in one week, so you can absolutely pick one place (or more!) and do a mini vacation. And it’s not selfish at all, you deserve a do-over, and don’t bring them lol.

    1. I agree, California is beautiful. I think it’s also pretty expensive, though. No? LA seems like it would be EXTREMELY expensive. Have you ever heard of Half Moon Bay? I’d love to see Half Moon Bay! Rooms there are like $500 a night though. LOL I can dream!!

      1. It can be, but I stayed at The Garland which was nice, had an awesome restaurant, and was not too far from anything. I rented a car and just explored. There was a supermarket a block away which was actually cheaper than NY, which is where I live near to, and the restaurants were pretty standard, but again, I live near NYC so that may have skewed my perception. If you research now, I’m sure you can find something to fit your budget.

      2. Thanks! I’ve not heard of the Garland! I appreciate the info. I bet New York would be an amazing weekend adventure, but you’re right, very expensive!!!! I would love to do New York one day! I’m going to find a great trip on the west coast this time around

      3. Awesome!! I really hope you do it and can’t wait to read about it. Hiking the Hollywood hills for your birthday?!?! Priceless! 🙂 But whatever you decide to do, it will be memorable. And yes, you definitely should take a trip to NYC sometime!

  6. Giving money for a gift is frowned upon when it is initiated by the sender- which indicates that they aren’t very thoughtful to know you well enough to give you something you would find meaningful. When it should be fine when requested by the receiver and takes all the hassle out of shopping. A cash gift lets the person put it towards getting EXACTLY what they wanted, so you can’t beat that. 🙂

    1. Thank You. I’m going to think about it that way. If they give me money for my birthday then I can use that money exactly how I want – on an adventure! ❤

    1. AWE! I have been to Moncton for work before! Thanks for the offer.<3 I think the plane ticket from BC might bankrupt me! lol. This is not a cheap country to fly in.

  7. Hi! I don’t have any travel suggestions but I just want to say: You don’t have to feel selfish for wanting to do something for yourself on your birthday. There’s a quote that says “true service is always to self.” Hope you find something fun!

  8. Hello Vee,
As I have limited knowledge on the geography of Canada, it would be foolish of me to suggest a trip to a specific place.

Maybe I am in the minority, or simply getting too old, but I personally feel that “cash” gifts show that the giver does care because they want you to spend it how “you” want to…

I do sincerely hope you have a very happy day ❤

  9. Is coastal Oregon or Washington more doable for you? I’ve heard those areas are super relaxing. I’d love to go myself but since I’m all the way on the east coast, the flights are SO expensive. Maybe one day! Happy birthday BTW, hope you find something to make your day happy.

    1. Oh, it’s still a few weeks away. I’m just wanting to plan it now so I can hopefully plan something and not just sit around doing nothing. Ya know?
