Someone has asked me to build and market a website (and subsequent social media platforms) for them… for free.
Fuck off.
Seriously.
I think that people mistake my desires to help, provide suggestions or assistance as a willingness to do it for them. There’s a big difference between providing suggestions and doing it for you.
If you want me to do something for you, you can pay me. Time is money, and I AM VERY GOOD at what I do, so you can pay a premium, please and thank you. And, if you don’t think I’m worth paying than please, by all means, go and do it yourself. No sweat off my back. I know my worth. I also know that proper marketing is not as easy as people think it is. So, really and truly, good fucking luck.
Damn straight.

Thank you for hearing my rant and cheering me on. For a little bit I felt like I was overreacting. But really, they need to learn the hard way I think.

Don’t they have automatic softwares / platforms for these nowadays, where you don’t have to code, but simply select predefined templates and pay for additional services as a subscription?

They just don’t want to put forth the time or effort. They just figured that, hey, since I have experience it’s easy peasy for me and I can do it for them because… we’re acquaintances of sort. Talk about trying to exploit someone you don’t even refer to as your friend…

Well thank you. I think once I figure my life out all this other noise won’t bother me as much as it is presently.

Absolutely! I guarantee that :). It’s a major indicator of how someone is doing mentally.
Your situation does remind me (as far as I can see with my incomplete perspective) so much of mine over the last two years, but I’m nearing the end of it now.
You’ll get through it, and you’re going to have an interesting life, you have a lot to give to the world! Trust me when I say this period of struggle and discontentment is worth it, because you’ll come out with a better understanding of who you are and what you want, eventually. π€

Really? With all the free website building platforms out there? I mean, even I learned how to do that like twenty years ago.

I think they’re just lazy and would rather see who they can manipulate to do it for them…

If you give them an inch, they’ll take a mile.
Seriously, too many people will take advantage if you don’t stop them!

Even suggestions from someone who knows what she is talking about are precious. I don’t mean to say to should be payed for that but you could.
‘Just do that for me’ speaks more about the character of the person asking then anything else.
I’m glad you wrote ‘I know my worth’, those are wise words are it’s good to read/hear/think that once in a while, just not to forget it.

It’s a mad, mad world out there and I admit I do often forget those words. But, in times of needs, I’m reminded that doing something like that is far and above the connection of acquaintance. If they really think it’s that easy then they can do it for themselves, because I remember I do know my worth!

Bill them for your suggestions. That way they know the deal about what’s likely to come afterwards.

Thatβs it! π Very well said! My kind of attitude π Marketing is really difficult damn…

I’m not saying it’s rock science… but there is a finesse needed to find success with marketing. After all, there’s a reason why at one time Blackberry was on top of the world and now nobody owns them and RIM is virtually a ghost.

So very true! It may not be super difficult but I canβt say is easy too! And you need to know to do it well! My opinion is that not everybody can do it! As you said, you need to have a certain finesse to succeed!

Not that I’m comparing myself to a company. Just using that as an example as to how bad marketing can sink a company. lol

Nowadays honestly I believe everything is depending on marketing! A big company, a small company or even a personal blog π

One of my fav quotes is from Suze Ormon, “Free work leads to more free work.” That has rung true for me. I donated one of my panoramics and someone suggested I could sell them, for $10 more than what I paid for it. Selling 5 would make me maybe $40?? I’m still not over it!
I’m surprised you’re not doing this for a living? You have a ton of followers.

Oh man, I completely understand that notion. I wouldn’t be over it either.
As for surprised I’m not doing this for a living, do you mean blogging?

Yes, although I know many great writers who are able to manage financially because their spouse has a great job. The internet kind of ruined it for writing & photography. I just do this for fun, and to keep my aging mind a-chugging.

I think there’s room to make money but I think there’s a need to invest. I think when I start working and I can invest in my blog, then I might take the route of trying to see if I can make money. I don’t know yet. Possibilities are endless, I think. If you have that special sauce, it doesn’t matter how saturated the internet is, just go for it! There’s room for you out there.

True, great stuff stands out no matter what. One of my friends uses her blog for writing practice in between writing books. It’s always good to practice writing no matter what if that’s what you want to do. When I read your stuff I wonder why you’re not spending this time just writing a book too? Try an ebook for the heck of it & then go from there. From the cover of “Educated,” that looks like it was originally an ebook.

Thatβs insane theyβd expect you to work for free! Sad thing is they probably will find some poor soul to do it for them eventually. Itβs so important to know your worth and I definitely donβt blame you for ranting!

I don’t know. I think they might try to make their two kids do it for the,. I think they’re just out of touch with this whole digital world and looking for someone younger to just do it because they have no idea how much time, effort and finesse it takes.
