Canadian Corona Diaries

A cashier coughed directly on me yesterday. He said ‘oh do you want your receipt’ stuck out his hand and then coughed all over me. I nearly lost my fucking mind. I was actually crying before I even made it out of the store. It wasn’t one of those ‘I have something in my throat’ coughs, it was one of those deep from the chest lung infection style dry coughs.

SERIOUSLY.

I understand that people need money right now. But in a current-pandemic world, if you have a cough that is that bad, why the fuck are you at work? Why the fuck is your boss letting you work? How am I, a stranger, supposed to know whether or not your cough is just a cough? And even if it is just a cough, it’s one hell of a bad cough, dude. He should not be around people right now. At all.

    1. I just… I try to be understanding, but honestly, his cough was so bad. It wasn’t just an oh an accidental cough, it was a deep, deep cough from the chest. It really scared me.

    1. I definitely freaked out last night. And I definitely had nightmares of him coughing on me and me getting really sick because of it all night long. I think that’s what my major issue is right now. You just don’t know if someone’s cough is just a cough… that’s why if someone has a cough, they should be at home. I was a very sad girl last night. Today I’m doing okay, but that’s because I haven’t gotten sick. Praying it stays that way.

  1. Wow…that truly sucks V.
I’ve got this friend that has this really weird cough. And he’s complaining that the cough is ‘not allowing air to reach his chest well’. He said this when I went over today.
So I suggested he get tested; His mum (from the kitchen): God forbid! My son doesn’t have Corona.
His sister: *laughs, hey what if he does mum? It means all of us in this house are finished especially you Mummy.
They’re taking it lightly because we haven’t had any cases of the virus in our district yet.
My point; he’s going about his daily activities as normal – with the coughπŸ˜‘

  2. It’s astonishing how some people aren’t taking the COVID 19 virus seriously. Or even worse, their employers are allowing them to not take it seriously. Soon enough, though, almost everyone will know someone personally who has fought this virus. Perhaps then people will cough with care.

    1. I really hope that it doesn’t come to someone knowing someone who’s been through it. I REALLY hope the curve flattens before that happens. That being said, you’re right, it’s downright sad that people aren’t taking this seriously.

      1. I hope the curve flattens before things get even worse as well, Vee. My point was that perhaps people aren’t taking COVID 19 seriously because they haven’t yet been personally effected by it.

As our U.S. president Harry Truman once said, β€œWhen your neighbor loses their job it’s a recession, but when you lose yours it’s a depression.”

  3. I’m so sorry, V! That’s quite terrifying. It’s not overreacting at all. This isn’t the flu (which is serious enough itself). And after we all have several people on the news tell that’s how they got it, or someone died from the same situation. I was leaving a store the other day from where I felt bad that I don’t have a mask, bandanna, or scarf… just gloves. I apologized to the cashiers who were all wearing masks and gloves so they would know I was taking this serious and did appreciate them being there. They were very nice about it, but as I picked up my bad, I heard someone cough behind me. Immediately my mind freaked inside. I inwardly prayed as I looked to see who was close behind me and it was another employee WITHOUT a mask. My heart sank. I thought my family and struggles with guilt, fear, and just trying to stay calm and pray.
There are family members who make so many jokes, and mock all of this, and that adds tremendous stress and frustration, right out anger when I think of that kind of attitude and behavior, and then see friends in NY who have been quarantined for well over a month, maybe two, and all of their neighbors who have been dying. I get angry and sad for the health care workers and those who are at risk.
I pray for you, V! Maybe someone will read your post and realize how important ANY cough is right now. I pray the cashier did not have anything harmful. I pray for a hedge of protection around you, and anyone who come sin contact with him. Maybe someone will call in, or tell their employee go home and stay there. God loves you, and He does care about even this.

  4. Even if we werent in the mist of a pandemic anyone that coughs all over you should be dealt with severely. It is a sign of complete disrespect on a lot of levels and while some people have different ethics then others, violating someone else’s personal space is very bad. Now accidents happen, I understand that, but you generally can tell when someone doesnt give a shit and are just being a POS. Maybe thats not the case here but its no joke.

  5. I went to work with a sore throat and a dry cough because we live in a society where most companies don’t care if their employees are sick and/or dying. They sent me home because I failed the corona health screening they now do before everyone’s shifts start. I was like oh it took a pandemic for me not to get punished for being sick and now all of a sudden you effers care about my well being. If I can afford to and I am in good standing in this stupid level system we have to follow at work, I normally do stay home sick. If not, I have felt forced to work through many sicknesses. These people also had the audacity to say I should have never came to work sick and that I need to go home for 7 days without pay because CDC protocols. I am like A. You mother fuckers never gave a crap before now if I was sick and B. I cannot afford to sit home without pay so you cheap mofos can either pay me since you are the ones that out of blue are following the correct protocols and sending me home(before I was lucky if I didn’t get fired for staying home for a few days with a cold, flu or whatever sickness it may be.) I got in touch with my doctor, the covid hotline etc and I ended up in self quarantine with suspicion of COVID. Finally these fuckers paid me for my sick time. It took a pandemic for society to realize people should not be going to work sick and even perhaps everyone should have sick leave as not everyone lives in society that they can afford days off with no pay. This is all going to be laughable when this goes back to normal and companies go back to treating you like crap and not caring about your well being as long as you can serve their needs.

  6. Do you all have paid sick leave in Canada. If not, that employee may be facing an unenviable choice: put food on the table or take care of himself. In America, things are such that you often can’t choose both.

    1. He’s most definitely a teenager. I can’t see him being older than 18. And that’s being generous. This particular store doesn’t offer sick-leave. But, there are restrictions put in place by the government that says if someone is sick they’re not allowed to be at work right now and stores could face fines and possible closure if they let employees work while they’re sick.

    1. I’m trying.
Don’t think I’ll be going out for a long time after that. On the off chance I do have his germs, I don’t need to give them to anyone else.

    1. When I see masks left on the ground or shelves or whatnot, I get so angry. In a pandemic world, it’s basically like leaving a snotty kleenex out. I can’t believe that people think it’s just okay to act that way.

  8. I’m so sorry that happened to you. Unfortunately I’m sure it’s happened to others as well. I’m sure (I really hope) it wasn’t him just being stupid and money hungry being at work. Stay safe Vee!

    1. Like you say, it’s probably happened to a ton of people lately, and it’s probably a reason why a ton of people got corona virus. I think that’s why I was so scared. I just hope people start to take this more seriously than they are.

  9. WHY. Even if it wasn’t Coronatimes. Even if he wasn’t serving customers. WTAF didn’t his parents teach him to cover his damn mouth?

You know what I’m about to say. Say it with me. I hate people.

I just… whatever someone is sick with, even if it’s completely and totally minor in every way, people need to stay home. This is not the time to ‘risk it’.

  10. Oh my. This post is very concerning to me because you bring up a very good point! Geez, how IS one to know and I am so sorry this happened to you V. I know myself how hard it is for me to leave my comforts at home and venture out into a store. It’s interesting how apparantly uncaring this person was to not excuse thems eery lives and at least attempt to reassure you. Some peopleπŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

    1. It sucks because I’ve been trying so hard to just not go anywhere that people might be. Abandoned trails? Great. Grocery store? No. But I quite literally could not avoid this trip. It really puts a sour taste in my mouth. I can’t avoid going to the store, I can’t avoid not going to the store…. life.

    1. He was not. He was the cashier and he was not wearing a mask. The cashiers at this store were only wearing gloves… which means nothing if he turns around and coughs all over his hands…

  11. It takes anywhere from two to 14 days for the symptoms of coronavirus on you. In the meantime, I’d strongly suggest you start improving your immune system via various methods and meds.

  12. Some stores are being really picky. For example, Walmart said they’re not letting go on sick leave if they think they have corona unless they have a doctors note – first of all, you can’t even go to your family doctor to get a sick note and going to the hospital just for a note is useless. My friend told me this towards the beginning of the pandemic so i hope they changed their rules now.
