In my opinion

I’m so livid right now.

If you think the small, simple act of wearing a mask in public is infringing upon your rights, or doesn’t do anything, then next time you or someone you love needs to have surgery (which could very well happen soon if you/they contract COVID) then please feel free to go ahead and tell the doctors, nurses and surgical aids they need not wear masks to protect the sterility of the operating room. Because if you truly don’t think masks do anything, why should anyone wear them for your sugery?

Also, if someone knowingly has a COVID 19 diagnosis and willingly and purposefully goes out into public whilst sick, they should be charged with public endangerment. (Yeah I’m talking about the COVIDIOT case from Fire Island) At that point you’re purposefully releasing a biological contagion onto innocent people that could potentially cause them lengthy hospital stays/death. Yeah… that should be a crime.

      1. Your mayor sounds smart. At least they thought ahead to say there are exceptions. Yeah, it might be hard to wear it if you’re connected to an oxygen tank or something of the sort, but if you’re fine and healthy and just wandering around the grocery store breathing down people’s necks in the checkout lines… why the heck can’t you be wearing a mask?

They’re trying to make it mandatory here and the government is fighting it. Honestly, the only reason they want to make it mandatory is because so many people refuse. If people just got a mask and wore it, this would be a non issue. I don’t understand why stopping the spread of germs is such a bad thing to some people…

      2. Lots refuse here as well, there’s a community chat on FB which has been predominantly people arguing over the matter.
Much of the posts are about how ineffective masks are, complaining or praising the mayor, how rights are being infringed, how a mask pales in comparison to a TSA screening and is merely an inconvenience for the good of all, complaints and praise for the governor, complaints and praise for the president. It’s a very divisive topic.

  1. I saw one of them at the grocery (in front of me in a queue) yesterday just like that, not wearing a mask and proud of it. The guy before him with a kid confronted him but he didn’t budge. We told the staff he shouldn’t have been allowed inside (as is policy). He just strutted out of the store after paying for his stuff like he didn’t just bothered a lot of people. Incredible. I agree it should be a crime.

  2. Thank you! I landed in urgent care this morning with Covid symptoms. I have only left the house a handful of times and always wore a mask! Now I am isolated to my room until my results are back in 7-10 days! In the meantime I’m laying in bed having back-pain with every breath and nearly passing out form lower oxygen! If you don’t like a mask, you won’t like this virus!

    1. I’m so sorry you had to go to the hospital. I hope that your test comes back negative, but also, thank you for saying you won’t go out until after your test comes back. Too many people wander around in public while waiting for results and it drives me bonkers.

  3. People don’t take the COVID-19 seriously enough here. Some businesses are doing the right thing and a huge shout-out goes to Bulk Barn for vigorously practicing social distancing and insisting that customers wear a mask. They give masks out for free! I was blown away by their generosity. 😷

They need to make wearing a mask mandatory here so everyone follows the rules. It’s not the proactive people I am concerned about – it’s the nonchalant people who don’t think this pandemic is serious until a) they contract it b) a loved one gets it or c) someone they know dies from it. It should not take a huge event like that to make people wake up, and yet, there’s still a lot of people who are asleep.

    1. That’s amazing that Bulk Barn is giving out masks! I really think masks are going to be made mandatory here any day now. As much as they’re trying to downplay it, it’s still a serious issue in this city. You’re so right, people aren’t taking it seriously here…

      1. As much as I like Calgary, I’m embarrassed that people aren’t following the rules here. Some cities in Ontario already made masks mandatory and I’m hoping that this is put into practice here. Agreed! Really hoping that masks are going to be mandatory. It’s also good to see that stores are selling masks again, and that masks are finally in stock.😷

  4. Sing it sister!!! That’s been my feeling for awhile now. You can really tell the people who weren’t told NO in their lives, were perpetually misbehaved children etc. Get over it already, geez! Where are the values and care for others. If a piece of cloth bothers you so much but having pur government decide your reproductive rights and birth control options doesn’t there is seriously something screwy with your thinking. This is my opinion and I’m not up for debating it. It floors me these folks that are protesting here in the US over being shut down or having to wear mask but are A OK with my aforementioned statement. I look at the countries that have completely wiped out the COVID19 and it was due to strict enforcements and tracking. If we can just shut up and buckle down for a bit temporarily, we could do the same. The sense of entitlement is disturbing to me.

  6. Sadly the world is not short of idiots. Here in New Zealand we have been very fortunate that our government shut down early. All incoming passengers have to go into 14 days isolation in hotels….paid for by us the NZ tax payer. And yet some idiots who have just arrived, broke out of isolation and went wandering off into supermarkets and stores endangering the very people who are paying for their accommodation. Ungrateful idiots!

    1. Oh gosh. Our government made the fourteen day isolation rule but they haven’t been enforcing it unless someone calls with a complaint. Bit also, we are apparently now hosting the rest of the NHL season and none of the 51 people coming in from each of those teams is subject to the 14 day isolation….because apparently professional athletes get special exceptions. So you know… numbers are gonna spike again.

Honestly, I’ve tried to keep up with major world announcements about Covid and it seems like NZ has been one of the best handling the pandemic on earth. Minus the idiots who broke free from isolation purposefully, I think we could all learn some lessons from NZ.

  7. I post on your blog because you welcome everyone and youre reasonable. You know what I am going to say…. You know I am a libertarian. Here me out. Wearing a mask is common sense, and people who are refusing to do it are just being asses. Its a small thing to do that makes other people feel better and protects people. Even if you think its all a hoax (and there are people who do) why wouldnt you do it? Why be an ass?

My problem is government. I get very nervous when governments REQUIRE citizens to do anything. This is a slippery slope and can lead to vast overreaches by said government. In the U.S. we are still living with extreme intrusion into our data by the NSA which was called the “patriot act”. Whenever there is a calamity citizens, correctly, look to their governments for direction. Government as a whole, IMHO is corrupt and when we give them more control over our lives we allow them to take our liberty.

You should wear a mask because its the right thing to do, but gov mandates? Should those who dont have masks on go to jail? I agree with your post in spirit V, but I get super nervous when we willingly empower government beyond what is reasonable. I want people to wear masks until this clears up, but I dont want “snitch lines” and big brother watching every body and single out non mask wearers for, I dont know, re education?

Thanks for providing a safe place for your followers to give thier views.

    1. I understand and agree where you are coming from. However, we are talking about a pandemic and something that is life threatening. Your thoughts are a far stretch from ‘government’ control. They are not asking us to hand over our guns or something that has no reason behind it. No one questioning when they made the seat belt law for safety reasons. The mask rule and it being manatory is for everyone’s protection and safety. What people are arguing is very far from government control. If masks shouldn’t be mandatory, than we should have no laws at all and every single one made or passed is totally them trying to control us. So from now on, no more seat belt laws, anyone at any age can buy cigarettes, and buy alcohol. Drinking and driving is another pretty good law that was put in place, wouldn’t you agree?

Also note: I have been on the fence of what to believe when it comes to the coronavirus from day one. I think there is a possibility is is a hoax and yes could be for government control. I believe if it is a real thing, it was probably a man made thing that got out too soon as a test if they ever needed it. Or it could be just what it is. I question everything the government does to a tee, and I never trust them anymore. But crying about a mask rule is ridiculous. I feel we have many more problems we need to worry about. I think saying the mask rule is some form of a government control is a bit far stretched because it has safety reasons behind it and can be justified. Hardly anyone said a word when the government made all these other laws for safety reasons. or has someone seriously pissed about drinking and driving being against the law? shit like that. As an essential worker myself I thought it was bull shit I have had to wear a mask now for a month and customers didn’t have to, yet would bitch if they saw an employee with their mask off. I don’t want someone breathing in my face or near me when there is no pandemic going, never mind when there is one or if there is one.

    2. If this pandemic is real, I believe yes someone that doesn’t wear a mask should go to jail because they are jeopardizing other people’s safety. So just in case, it is real I think we should take the precautions yes. They are trying to keep the numbers down without trying to go back into lock down. I think it’s smart, because if we do go back into lock down (some places already are again) people will be crying a lot more than about wearing a mask. You just can’t win with society can you? If people didn’t need to be babysat and if the majority of society was actually smart (most are not and I don’t care if that’s mean or sounds negative) they wouldn’t need to go to extremes of enforcing masks. Instead people are going around hanging out in large social groups, no masks on, hugging each other etc and not caring if they got COVID or not. People are also slobs for the most part. It is why we are in trouble right now. So yes the government does have to enforce such rules unfortunately cause people don’t listen to guidelines. They tried encouraging masks and social distancing nicely. they did do it the nice way and it didn’t work. We have ourselves to thank for that and not fault of the government.

      1. This pandemic is real. Could it have been man-made…. sure. Would we ever learn the truth about it… not a chance. But this pandemic is real.

The entire world did not get together to try and overthrow the American election. As much as we don’t like Donald Trump, the implication that it is a hoax is essentially spitting on the corpse of every single person (more than a half million) who’s lost their life to this virus in the past few months.

      2. It is more likely real, and that is why I am taking every precaution myself to make sure. It doesn’t hurt you know? Like I work in a grocery store over night with no air conditioning and believe me it is hot. I sweat my butt off…and I have a mask on the entire time. It has also brought my acne problem back, and just before all this happened I had just gotten my acne to finally go away. lol. I was so mad…BUT if I can do it then anyone can I feel. I don’t get why people are complaining about the mask rule. Even if people truly believe it is a hoax, that is not my business and their choice BUT wear a damn mask, it is really not that big of a deal I feel. People are so ignorant and stupid. Society makes me angry every single time I leave my house preety much, so trust me I feel you on this whole thing.

The problem is when you have a government that no one trusts anymore, they will even question you in the most hardest times. It is why it is so scary right now for the USA. It is why they are not handling this right now well at all becauae everything is a chaotic mess. I don’t really blame the people for thinking it is a hoax. When people say Americans are very mislead and uneducated…it’s not a stereotype or an attack. It is true, and I know this now that I live here. I cannot converse with most people here because it is so unfortunate how little they know about their own nation, never midn the rest of the world. And I live in one of the better parts of the states. It is so corrupt here. 9/11 was something that was questioned for years and the government or those in charge never bothered to lead a proper investigation or do anything to convince the public of anything. Even if it was a true terrorist attack, then fine but they never truly showed that it was. They basically came out and said this was what happened regardless of what people who saw it take place asked, regardless of what the firemen who were on sight questioned…nothing. That was the day I believe people lost faith in their government or a turning point. Iraq War later was another massive lie and most military who spent time in Iraq knew that war was based on lies. They told the public it was based on lies. Especially the vets who had nothing to lose. When you cannot trust your government with such huge things how are you suppose to trust them now?

I didn’t think people thought it was a hoax to over throw the election. I thought people think it is a hoax for more control over their people. When this all started people were feared we would be thrown into FEMA camps or along the lines of that. The elections don’t matter anyways. Pretty sure they are going after the wrong problem. The problem is they selected Trump and Biden as the best choices and both suck. Even if Biden was the better option (let’s pretend) the man is far too old for a job such as president. He could possibly have a heart attack his first term if selected elected. Not to mention, all the other issues. So yes again…GOOD JOB AMERICA.

I love the USA I do and the people, but right now it is very broken. I am not surprised people think it’s a hoax. They don’t even know the problems to begin with, never mind fixing them. Not all Americans, but some are very poorly lost and uneducated. :/

    3. While I very much agree that it is/can be a slippery slope from one rule to taking over citizen’s lives and there are tons of countries on earth under literal dictatorship where they don’t have any freedoms in life, I just think that something like this shouldn’t have to be the issue that it has become. I don’t really see this as something that relates. Being told to wear a mask for the next few months so that you won’t have to for the next 20 years seems like a small ask of people. Ya know?

Why can’t people wear a mask? If they just put one on their face then government and municipal leaders wouldn’t feel the need to try and mandate. With this, they’re no trying to mandate as a means to control people, they’re literally just trying to keep as many people as possible from getting sick. If people just genuinely thought that it’s a nice, and smart, thing to do then this would be a non starter. It’s easy. Just put a mask on. Even if someone thinks it’s a hoax, it’s literally putting a piece of cloth over their nose and mouth as to limit the spread of germs in public. Does it make your face hot? Sure. Is having a hot face an easy ailment to get over? Absolutely.

To me, it’s a non-starter. If people aren’t wearing a mask, the grocery store shouldn’t let them in. Do people need to go to jail for wearing not wearing a mask? No. I didn’t say that. But, you know, they can be kicked out of the grocery store, or the pharmacy or the hair salon or wherever they’re trying to go where they could potentially spread germs. Maybe then they’d figure it out? People are acting like they’re being told to wear a face mask every day, 24 hours for the rest of their lives.

Honestly, too many people are being selfish right now.

      Liked by 3 people

      1. I agree, but the selfishness isnt exclusive to people not wearing masks, it includes people who demand they do. Meaning very simply, when you use absolute outcomes you leave no room for other points of view. That is the pinnacle of selfishness in my view. Of course we are all free to believe whatever we want, for now anyway.

You are 100% correct that that grocery store shouldnt serve them. That is the answer in my view. A private institution like a store can have any rules they want within the law, if they require masks and someone doesnt wear one they can be denied service. This compels people to wear the mask.

Where we are now? We have hot lines people can call to report other people for non compliance. That is a very scary proposition and is the slippery slope. How long does the hot line exist for? What if after 6 months I think its cleared up and want to go without one? Am I to be arrested and reeducated to comply?

It’s not a road I want to go down but sadly The willingness of others to go down it makes it all moot. If you do not comply you will be named and shamed and in some cases worse as one person replied, they support jail.

This is a precedent and any side can take up the mantle should the come to power. Who is to say that a few years from now a new strain of HIV hits that is very potent. Will the hotline come back to report people you suspect of engaging in homosexual behavior?

Many will say thats a ridiculous leap, maybe it is but history is filled with leaps like that. Empower government with MORE power due to fear rarely works out well.

Thanks for your comment, none of my jibes were directed at you personally. Take care V.

      2. I have one more beef to share sorry. This is why it needed to be mandatory truly in my opinion (and I am surprised I forgot to mention it before)

You say that public places can just deny entry and make their own rules within the laws. What if a public place decides not to make masks mandatory for entry and let’s anyone in with or without a mask on? You think the employees who work there feel safe?

Well let me tell you about my experience…I work for a pretty big company (Meijer) and since they went out of lock down they have made masks mandatory for employees, but not customers. I asked why because I felt unsafe working this entire time around customers who have no respect for personal space nor respect to wear a mask. They gave me some bs excuse that the government must enforce it as a law or whatever. I more thought it was more so cause my company can’t turn down a sale because corporate is a bunch of greedy bastards. I have been working for the past month or so forced to sweat to death in a mask, has had my hazard pay taken away and no longer feel like I am being taken care of by my company. A. If masks are still mandatory for employees, that means there is still a hazard and I should still be receiving my hazard pay bonus. B. If it is only mandatory for us to protect the customers, but not mandatory for the customers then our company truly doesn’t give a crap about my safety or the employees. We even had customers with the adacity to complain to management when they would see an employee dare take their mask off for a few seconds so they could breath. I am like okay I get it, but there are customers here who are not wearing a mask so if you are so afraid and concerned, then don’t leave your house. Don’t go and tell our management because it makes no sense.

I have felt unsafe and not taken care of at my job I have worked at for over two years to the point I have considered quitting, except I can’t just quit. It is not like it is easy to go find a job right now, and not to mention the raises I have gotten and my sonority I have at my work place now. ETC. Like it would be stupid to quit right now.

I 100% support the mask rule and I wish people would stop whining and complaining about it. It is a lot worse having to wear a mask while working inside (my shift there is no air conditioning on for the majority of my shift) than having to wear it just shopping. I don’t feel sorry for people who complain about something so small especially if it is trying to protect us. It needed to be mandated because companies were not making such guidelines or caring and cause people weren’t listening. Again they did try it the nice way.

I find it dangerous that anyone would be willing to send someone else to jail because of how they feel. Its bad enough that we have to label people (as whiners for now) but now fines, jail, public shaming, canceling?

If your comfortable in that world that’s fine I am all for personal liberty. The last thing I would offer you is this, its all abstract until it affects you. Today its “not wearing a mask” none of us know what the next calamity will be.

It may be that your on the wrong side of it, but the precedent is set now. Government decides for you, I hope it doesnt happen but history shows time and again that it will.

So far there’s been a lot of grumbling, but the only people objecting enough to not wear them are the anti-government and hoax types. Which… Montana has a lot of. Probably has to do with being so close to Canada. Mostly people have just been doing their shopping in neighboring counties. And complaining about it a lot. Like, A LOT.

The penalty for refusing to wear a mask is apparently a fine. $10-200. Something I haven’t yet seen be enforced. And a mandate that isn’t enforced ain’t much of a deterrent, is it?

It is generally a complaint lodged with the police by the victim of a cognizable offence or by someone on his/her behalf. Only after the FIR is registered, the Police can start the investigation. Its what we use here in India.

They’re sooooooooo determined to fall on either side of the political spectrum that something so simple as wearing a mask (that doesn’t have a darn thing to do with politics) has driven a further political wedge. 1. Honestly, I think the United States is fighting contact tracing so much because if they actually learned where the virus was coming from, people could technically be criminally charged for infecting others in some states. I was reading about it last night. Much like if someone doesn’t disclose their HIV status to a sexual partner, putting their life at risk, if contact tracing could prove someone gave someone else COVID, I think it would put a serious weight on the US legal system. Maybe?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yeah our government jumped on that ship as soon as they could. When we came out of alert level 2, you had to sign in at every place you went to for contact tracing purposes and they had scannable QR codes as well so you could sign up. We weren’t given a choice and sometimes that is what needs to happen.

      2. Dang, that sounds extremely effective. The Canadian government hasn’t made it that far. I wish we could.
If outbreaks happen (like seven people in my office contracting it), they’ve gotten good at tracking where that came from. But general contact tracing from person to person isn’t possible yet.

  12. I don’t agree with the “it’s my right to NOT wear a mask” stance because it is never an individual’s right to intentionally inflict harm on another! With so much controversy about the effectiveness of the mask, it’s very confusing. But I wear one in public because I want to honor and respect my fellow citizens.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Thank you for wearing a mask. Sincerely. I appreciate people in public I see wearing masks. It makes me feel a lot less anxious when people just wear masks. It’s such a small thing but it means a great deal. Not just to me and my anxiety, but to everyone.

I think the confusion about the effectiveness of masks comes from the fact that there’s no cure, there’s no vaccine, there’s no definable means to prevent. It’s kind of like wearing a bike helmet. If you get into a big enough bike crash, the helmet is not going to prevent head injury. That being said, if you’re just out for a casual ride and fall off going slow, the helmet does aid and protect your head from getting severe head injuries. I know that’s not a good example because a lot of people hate wearing bike helmets too. But truthfully, it’s lot like a bike helmet or even a life jacket. If you have the opportunity to limit your chances of transmitting the virus, why wouldn’t you take it? If you have the opportunity to limit the extent of a head injury, why wouldn’t you take it? No one rides a bike intending to crash, but it happens every day. If you go swimming and can prevent drowning by wearing a life jacket, why wouldn’t you? No one goes out intending to drown, but shit happens. It’s tragic, but if there’s means to help prevent it, why not take it?
