Corporate Poaching

A new start-up has been systematically poaching the best employees from my company recently. It has been interesting watching this unfold. Management is… crumbling. They’re trying to hide it but they’re definitely stressed to the max.

This is a new experience for me. I’ve never worked in an industry in which poaching happened. In my previous work people were either fired for incompetence, criminal negligence or general stupidity. People leaving, resigning, willingly… because they were poached to a start-up that isn’t even public yet, it’s interesting to watch. The shape of the entire company is changing right in front of my eyes.

  1. I am surprised it’s the first experience of that kind for you. In my world, that’s the normal situation, and that’s how 98% of people in my industry switch jobs

      1. Many companies around me request the leaving employer to sign a non-soliciting agreement so that they can’t actively recruit from the same company for a year or two after they leave. But as you can imagine there are other ways to get around this rule.
        Right now is a “time of migration” – companies are paying off the bonuses for 2020, and people who were planning to leave, leave.

  2. Fun! That kind of stuff is fascinating to watch if you don’t have a stake in the outcome. Granted you do have a stake, but it’s not your company either, so if you can manage to stay a little bit impartial. There are great lessons to be learned about human nature in the face of adversity.

  3. Sounds very interesting. My sister works in a similar cotporate environment. Often times companies will implement contracts with non compete clauses to avoid these types of situations. Intrested to hear how this story unfolds 🤔

    1. Non-compete means that 1) you can’t do a side job within the same industry 2) when you announce you are leaving there is no waiting period – you are walked out of the office right away. the non-soliciting agreement means you are not allowed to recruit from the place you left for a period of time.

      1. Yes, non-compete contracts are notoriously difficult to enforce. They rarely come into play. As another commenter mentioned they are most often used to stop people from moonlighting.

  4. Haha humans in corporate settings doing all that rat race stuff remind me of seagulls, just flocking to where the nicest bits of free food are, and nothing more. Rats and seagulls 🤣. Capitalism fucking sucks. The management should use the money they’re no longer paying the lost employees with to increase the wages of the remaining ones. Of course they won’t, and they’ll lose more.

  5. I am really surprised this is the first time you’re experiencing this. Poaching is not new, it happens all the time. There is also something like a mob mentality, where a group of friends at the same workplace will influence each other and leave all at once. Try and keep your head in place!

    1. I worked in sports prior to joining corporate. Sports is a lot of people coming… burning out, or doing something stupid… and then leaving for a new industry. It’s funny how you talk about mob mentality. This company I work for, when it was founded, it was founded by five guys who worked at a company together who all quit at the same time and started this company together. Now a bunch of their employees are all quitting in the same month to go to this startup. It’s like history repeating itself!
