Why is it that when I read writing that is not my own, I can catch spelling mistakes in seconds, but when reading my own work, I glaze right past spelling mistakes EVERY TIME. EVERY TIME.
I know how to spell.
Every word that I spell wrong, I know the proper spelling of.
On a completely unrelated note, we’ve got a lot of snow here. I’m definitely not impressed about it.
Don’t worry…I miss a lot of mine too. Sometimes I’ll change a sentence and overlook that I’ve completely fucked up the whole paragraph. It happens! Snow…well ours is gone and it is now warm and humid.on balance I prefer snow, but then I’m weird.

Yeah, this was something I was writing for someone else, though.
I made a pretty stupid mistake in it.

You know…for the past maybe 10 years, or more, I don’t think I’ve read a single book that didn’t have an error in it. Once upon a time, that never would have happened!

lol…we always use different eyes on other peoples stuff cuz we don’t know what it’s going to say. With our own stuff we “fix” it as we go with our eyes….On another note…keep the snow over there. We’re quite content with the spring sunshine. xo

That’s so true.
I genuinely think we’re conditioned to overlook our own mistakes.

That’s exactly what it is, and not just for spelling. Our eyes see what they know it should be, not what it is.

Like you I know how to spell, but when I type, I tend to invert letters in words or get ahead of myself as my mind works at 90mph while my typing is more like 30. So I put entirely incorrect words in sentences. Most of the time I catch them, not always.

Agree! It doesn’t help that autocorrect is out there changing things like were to we’re. Who programmed that?

Yeah. Autocorrect couldn’t even help me this morning, it was in a program that doesn’t have autocorrect. I love it when autocorrect changes a perfectly spelled word, though… just because it’s an uncommon word.

I have such a love/ hate relationship with it. But the base logic is insane! They love apostrophes. If I wanted one there, I would have put it there!

On the bright side, at you can edit spelling errors on here. Imagine if you weren’t able to edit anything and your mistakes remain permanent. I deal with a program like that and it’s a complete nightmare.

I put out an advertisement this morning with a spelling mistake on it. To fix it, I had to delete the advertisement and resubmit it for approval to the platform. So, yeah, I get it a little bit. Not totally the same, but similar. lol

Regardless if you’re married to your words or not, your eye will always have a slightly favorable look upon your work. I insist on having someone look over my copy before it goes online/printed.
I’m slightly dyslexic so the word ‘from’ inevitably becomes ‘form’ and I can read right through it without catching the error.

Yes! I was talking about this with my boss and my boss said that it’s human nature for us to glaze over our own mistakes, such as ‘from’ becoming ‘form’.

Not seeing your own spelling errors is very common. Somehow our minds when proof reading our own sees the right spelling because it somehow lets us see the correction and not error.
I have had spelling mistakes quite often until I started paying attention to the word processor. It will show mistakes with a funny blue line under the word.

Yeah. Thankfully when I write in word, it catches a lot of it for me. This morning I was using a digital platform for an advertisement that didn’t check spelling. It was tragic!

I’m pretty sure there’s a term or expression used to relay this common, yet frustrating phenomenon amongst us writers, but I don’t recall what it is…any case, I’m in the same boat as you, as I would publish a post (especially after many drafts and proof-reading) and then re-read to realize that I’d made an error! As long as you don’t have so many errors that it distracts readers from the message, I’m sure you’re just fine. 🙂

You know what you are saying in your head so your eyes can deceive you into thinking you typed the word correctly. Everyone makes mistakes, even the best of us. Give yourself a break and some chocolate. All will be well ❤

Isn’t it true for everything Vee? Others faults stare at us all the time effortlessly and our own keep hiding deep within us 😌

It’s apostrophes in other people’s writing that I spot but can never get right myself. I think if you look at something for too long you stop seeing what’s there.

My problem is missing out the odd word from stuff I’ve written. I can re-read a paragraph 10 times and not spot that I’ve missed out a word. So annoying!

When reading your own stuff your eyes get comfortable because you already know what you wrote. It is tedious, but I reread my blogs over and over before sending them out. I am always shocked at the mistakes and misspelling that I miss the first few times that I proof read. Like you I read someone else blog and boom! I see mistakes and misspelled words.

Scientists say, every time you look in the mirror, your brain releases chemicals that make you feel better than you look. I guess the same thing applies here. Oh , and when it’s time to be judgemental… Don’t test that pink matter 🤠
