Alexa, are you having a stroke?

When I left the pharmacy after my first Pfizer vaccination, the Pharmacist told me that the Province wasn’t allowing second shots to be sooner than 4 months from that point in time, so he would phone me in when the time came that I was eligible for my second shot.

Well, the magic of science and a lot of people working a lot of hours have resulted in more vaccines shipping into this country faster, and in larger batches. As a result, the Province has begun administering second doses… early.

The Pharmacist called me on Wednesday and asked if I could come in for Friday to get my second vaccination.

Hell yes. Nothing was going to keep me from that appointment.

So, I went yesterday and got my second vaccination. I cannot even begin to explain to you what a relief that was, and how excited and happy I was to have my second vaccination. The second dose also made me feel VERY tired. I started feeling very tired not long after the vaccination and that feeling has stuck with me since.

On the bright side, I haven’t been feeling sick at all. I’ve seen a lot of people online reporting flu-like symptoms after the second dose. Me, I haven’t felt that yet. Perhaps I got lucky.

Last night, as I was napping, my Amazon Alexa device decided to have some sort of a technological stroke, or a heart attack. I’m not really sure. I was awoken to beeping. A lot of really loud beeping. And it just kept beeping. I was so tired I felt like I couldn’t move. It was more my not wanting to move, but this damn Alexa device just kept beeping.

“Alexa, turn off,” I said.

“ALEXA, I’M AWAKE,” I yelled.

Nothing happened. It just kept beeping.

Finally I managed to muster up the energy to and unplug Alexa. I left it unplugged.

This morning when I awoke from my slumber, I walked passed Alexa to go and brush my teeth and I realized she was still unplugged from last night. Thinking it was a momentary lapse in Alexa’s judgement, I decided to plug her back in.

I don’t know what is happening. Alexa is broken? Or sick?

Every time I plug it in the device just beeps and beeps and beeps.

Has anyone had these issues before? If you did, how did you fix it? I googled Alexa issues and I didn’t find anything similar.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, also, if you made it this far, please get vaccinated when you get the chance.

  2. Glad you got your doses. I’m also double-dosed as of about a month ago but I still wear my mask when out. I was very tired after the first shot, but that also could have been a result of having to get up earlier than normal to get to the appointment. No adverse reactions to the second. I hope all works out well for you as well.

    1. Oh, so glad to hear you didn’t have any bad reactions too it! It truly does effect everyone differently, but I do like hearing that people have positive outcomes from it. Also, I’m in agreeance about wearing masks. I’ll likely be wearing mine for a long time to come. I’m okay with that!!

    1. I think your doses will come sooner, rather than later. I hope, at least! For me, I actually went outside of Calgary to get my vaccination. Calgary is a relatively progressive city and I knew there’d be huge uptake. Whereas there are smaller towns around Calgary that are less progressive and less likely to get vaccinated. Which is actually true. The pharmacist I saw, said that prior to being allowed to administer second doses, he actually had vaccines expire because the province told him he couldn’t administer them unless they were first doses and the town he operates in just had exceptionally low interested in getting vaccinated. I guess because so many people in rural Alberta aren’t getting vaccinated, he got the go ahead to administer second doses, rather than let them go to waste. I lucked out BIG TIME!

      1. Wow….I think you really seriously lucked out. i’m so sad at how many are opting out of vaccination. I personally can’t frikken wait to get my second shot and then find some semblance of normal.

  3. I got abnormally painful cramps last week, right after my first jab, and that was scary. I’m waiting it out to see how my cramps will play out in month 2. Depending on the outcome of it I might get my 2nd jab or run to the gynae. I hope all works well though and I get my 2nd dose! Glad you got yours. Such peace of mind.

    1. Oh man, that’s a first I’ve heard of that side effect. It sounds fucking awful, though. Regular cramps are hard enough. Abnormally painful? I feel for you. I hope that you get it sorted out so that it’s not too hard to get your second dose.

  4. I’m glad you’re not having the heavy symptoms after your second dose. When I got mine I was out of it for about a day. Fever, chills, body aches… I hated every second of it. But I’d gladly deal with that than full-on COVID.

And what you’ve described with Alexa… That’s exactly why I waited so long before I finally set mine up. I’ve heard and seen too many stories of Alexa responding to things that just aren’t there or the device completely freaking out for no reason. So far (knock on wood), my Echo hasn’t done anything out of the ordinary.

    1. Fever, chills and body aches doesn’t sound fun! I’m glad that it passed quickly. I think you’re right in saying it’s probably easier than having COVID.

As for Alexa… this particular device has been weird since I got it. I don’t know how much of the weirdness I’ve actually shared on this blog, but it’s woken me up in the middle of the night asking me what I want. It’s also completely cut out mid sentence. For a while when I asked it the temperature, it was telling me the temperature of Bahrain. I was weirdly for a while thinking it got hacked somehow. But whoever could/would hack me would be seriously wasting their time.

  5. Sounds like Alexa needs a break. Much like my Google Assistant whom I cannot rename yesterday said goodbye and shut down in response to a character on the t.v. saying goodbye and slamming the phone down. Our province is rolling out 12 and up which is exciting to say the least. I had my first shot yesterday and am feeling not sick but not 100% either. And my arm is achy not that I am complaining in the least. After having back issues for several months this is nothing. I have had a bit of a cough and runny nose but nothing serious. More like that tail end bit of having a cold. It is just that I have not had cold/flu in over three years so this might be a little bit of an icky feeling for me. They also recently opened up for the start of the second doses too. 🙂

  6. I was like you after my second dose. I was exhausted for a week. I felt fine, just really run down and tired. It gets better! Promise!

Also Alexa can be a bit of a dick sometimes.

  7. Congratulations!

Alexa has gained sentience and is now paying you back for all the stupid shit you’ve asked it over the years.

  8. 24 hours after receiving my second dose I had a fever for exactly two hours. Nothing else, didn’t feel bad or anything, just a random fever. My husband had an upset stomach for an hour… but that might have been the entire bag of Fuego Takis he ate…
